Melbourne – Nepali student Tarzon Budhathoki has been named a finalist for the Victorian International Education Awards 2024, presented by Study Melbourne. Budhathoki is shortlisted for the prestigious International Alumni Award in the Emerging Leader category, one of eight award categories recognizing the achievements and contributions of international students in Victoria.

Study Melbourne recently announced the finalists for these awards, which honor international students for their contributions to the community.

Having lived in Victoria for six years, Budhathoki is now among the top three students vying for the award, recognizing his work as a community advocate and leader.

“Tarzon Budhathoki, from Nepal, was elected vice president of Melbournepal in 2023, representing Nepalese students and youth in Victoria. His leadership approach focuses on advocacy, support, and cultural inclusion, through initiatives like the multicultural Dashain celebration. Tarzon’s endeavours foster unity, cultural exchange, and empowerment within the Nepalese and broader community in Victoria,” reads a statement on the Study Melbourne website.

The Victorian Government, through Study Melbourne, presents these awards to honor international students who have made significant contributions to their communities while studying in Victoria. Budhathoki shared his pride in being nominated as one of the three finalists, stating, “This recognition inspires me to continue my advocacy work and contribute more to the community.”

“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized as a finalist for this award. Being part of such a diverse and supportive community here in Victoria has motivated me to give back and make a difference, especially for international students like myself”, Budhathoki told Connect Nepali.

Budhathoki arrived in Australia in 2018 to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering Technology at the Melbourne Institute of Technology. While studying, he co-founded Stepping Zone, a non-profit organization designed to help international students develop professional skills and access job opportunities. His efforts also extend to advocacy roles, serving as a panelist for international student initiatives at various universities, working with the City of Whittlesea, and serving as a Student Ambassador for Melbourne City Council.

Currently, Budhathoki serves as Vice President of the Melbourne Nepal Association and works as an Asset Recovery Manager at TXO. His leadership continues to benefit both local and international students, particularly in areas related to careers, technology, and community support.

The winners of the Victorian International Education Awards will be announced at a ceremony on October 3, 2024. Budhathoki will compete against Fazil Mohammed of India and Hasan Muttakin of Bangladesh for the Emerging Leader International Alumni Award. These awards honor students who have completed their studies at Victorian institutions within the last five years, and finalists are selected by a panel of experts across various industries and government sectors.
